The City of Dayton's energy conservation and sustainability achievements are recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency with an Energy Star designation for the century-old City Hall building located at 101 W. 3rd St. The Energy Star certification follows the installation of more than 1,500 energy-saving T8 lights, a heating/air conditioning system upgrade, weatherization and other improvements. The City Hall upgrade is part of a 10-year energy savings performance contract with Honeywell designed to reduce costs and modernize facilities while saving energy.

The Green Team is a natural resource conservation group based in the City of Edinburgh consisting entirely of volunteers who give up their time, volunteering for the conservation and sustainability of our wild places in and around the Lothians which includes the areas around Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian.

In 2010, Waste Management surpassed its sustainability goal to have 100 of its sites certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council by the year 2020. With more than 25,000 acres set aside, the company now has 103 sites dedicated to preservation of local environments. The protected areas provide homes and breeding grounds for birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plant species, many of them protected or endangered.
